Fall is traditionally the season of pumpkins, but canned pumpkin offers an easy way to give dogs the health benefits and great taste of pumpkinsopens in a new tab year-round. Even just a little bit of this high-fiber, low-fat food makes mealtime special for your pup. It’s always wise to check with your veterinarian before feeding your dog anything new, but most dogs tolerate canned pumpkin well and seem to love it.
Benefits of canned pumpkin for dogs.
Canned pumpkin is great for dogs because it shares all the same benefits as fresh pumpkins: rich in antioxidants, beta carotene, fiber, and vitamins and mineralsopens in a new tab like vitamin C, vitamin E, folate and iron.

How much canned pumpkin do I give my dog?
Depending on your dog’s size, it is recommended that you give your dog anywhere from a spoonful to half a cup. As with any novel food being introduced to a dog, start with a very small portion and, if all goes well with their tummy, gradually increase the serving size.

Though canned pumpkin can enhance mealtimes, my favorite way to use it involves stuffing it into enrichment toys. Pumpkin pie filling should not be given to dogs because it has lots of sugar and spices, which can irritate a dog’s digestive system. Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
The thought of making homemade dog treats might seem intimidating, but this super simple pumpkin & peanut butter dog treat recipe is straightforward and easy to make. Pumpkin is not only healthy for pups, but your dog will find these pumpkin dog treats delicious.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Makes: 25
INGREDIENTS
2 ½ cups of whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons peanut butter
2 eggs
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup cannedpumpkin
DIRECTIONS
Align the baking rack in the middle of the oven.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Combine together dry ingredients (flour and cinnamon) in a medium bowl.
Whisk together eggs,pumpkin, and peanut butter in a large bowl.
Stir in the dry flour mix to thewet pumpkinmix until combined; the dough will be a little dry and crumbly.
Using a rolling pin, roll the biscuit dough to ½ inch thickness.
With a bone-shaped cookie cutter, cut out biscuits from the flattened dough.
Place biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet then bake for about 40 minutes or until firm.
