Research by Teesside University, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) and our Equally Well UK campaign found that 50% of people living with severe mental illness in the north of England were unable to afford food. The blatant and devastating link between poverty and mental ill health cannot be ignored. Taking action to reduce poverty would have a tangible impact on the mental health of the nation - we urge the Government to follow the evidence when considering reforms to social security.https://lnkd.in/etEebJS4#FoodPoverty #FoodInsecurity #PovertyandMentalHealth

School absences are rising amidst:📈 Escalating rates of mental health problems among young people🔴 Long waiting lists and rejected referrals for support💸 Rising child poverty⚠️ Unmet SEND needs.Punitive approaches, like fining parents, are ineffective and can cause further harm. Instead, what we need is for the government to:👉 Introduce a Mental Health Absence Code👉 Reduce the use of punitive sanctions-based approaches👉 Develop and fully resource a national programme to support schools, colleges and universities to adopt a 'whole education approach' to mental health. We've outlined what's fueling school absences, and now we need the government to address the wider factors to ensure ALL students can fully engage with education.Check out our report withChildren and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC)for our analysis and recommendations ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eAn3Kcpr#SchoolAbsences#SchoolAttendance#Education#Teachers#Students

"...it’s really unhelpful and frankly untrue to paint a picture where somebody is just "wanting" to have some time off for their mental health and getting signed off by their GP very readily."In this episode, Alethea Joshi and Andy Bell unpack recent rhetoric around both 'mental health culture' and 'sick note culture', and why claims of 'over-medicalising everyday worries' are extremely unhelpful. They dissect the factors fueling this backlash and explore where we’re at on our journey from mental health awareness to mental health literacy.🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eiAcTa_V🎧 Listen on Apple Podcasts:https://lnkd.in/e5ZAckvc📄 Full transcript and show notes: https://lnkd.in/eBwFJQqY#MentalHealth #MentalIllHealth #SickNoteCulture
