S9 - let me get this straight

So the official specs show that it is not only BIGGER than the Sigma FP, but it is also HEAVIER? Honestly, I am just speechless. Should have been smaller and lighter, pretty (but) pointless the way it is.

Well, my fp gets bigger than the S9 if I add the hot shoe adapter.

Unfortunately, the one on the S9 appears to be a cold shoe, while the fp is perfectly usable with flash indoors (sync speed of 1/30 isn't for fill flash).

Otherwise I think both the S9 and the fp are quite usable as cameras, provided you use lenses with aperture ring, such as the Sigma I-series, to free up one of the control wheels.

Maybe Panasonic do not want to make an even smaller and lighter L Mount body because they are afraid it would cannibalise their m4/3 sales?

I'd be fine with this if they actually come out with another "small" m43 camera with the same specs as the G9ii. Right now the S9 only self-competes with several-year-old cameras like the GF10/90.

I don't know how important battery life was in the design, but they'd have to use a much smaller battery to reduce the body size.

There is no denying that this is a good battery, same as in the S5 that I have, and it lasts longer than the battery in my Sigma FP, but the FP battery is smaller and it is still good enough for casual use, which is logically what smaller bodies are for. Smaller body, smaller battery, makes perfect sense. I would rather have a smaller battery and an extra one to go for the sake of the smaller and lighter body. Such a half-hearted effort from Panasonic IMHO.

It's all about context.

The camera is clearly not aimed at photographers, nor at existing L-mount videographers. It's aimed at smartphone video creators, YouTubers, TikTok-ers, etc. Those who shoot solo and share content.

If anyone needs more, there is the S5II, S5IIx, etc.

If that's the only market, what are they getting with this camera over a top of the line smart phone? You can live stream etc, directly from your phone, you can't do that with this camera.

If you really are done with the smart phone, you are looking for more than what this is giving you.

I disagree, and I think DPR's initial review puts it perfectly:

DPR wrote:

The S9 is specifically designed with a social media workflow in mind. This means providing social media creators with the tools necessary to generate a unique, signature look to their photos and videos straight out of the camera without requiring any editing skills.

In essence, the S9 is intended to provide social media creators with a camera-to-social-media workflow that can be executed quickly and easily, wherever they may be, without relying on a computer or any third-party software. Although the camera can support an enthusiast photographer's workflow, it's not optimized around that use case in the same way as a camera like the S5II and lacks features that dedicated photographers are likely to value, such as a dedicated viewfinder, a second command dial and direct controls for features such as AF mode and area.

Flip screen, IBIS, bigger battery and cold shoe all gotta fit somewhere. I'm not sure why you would have expected it to be smaller?

A phone won't have the same resolution or possible zoom range, and I suspect many vloggers will appreciate having a dedicated device, freeing their phone up while they work.

I'm not sure how old you are but no, No TikToker/YouTuber/whatever will switch to another device if their current workflow works fine for what they do.

No one cares about zoom range and resolution when making social media shorts...

It would've been one thing if they aimed this at serious content creators who do grading and edit their footage but that doesn't seem to be the case. Instead they're trying to replace phones which won't happen.

You’re right. Why would anyone want a small compact camera if they have a smartphone? Let alone with a shifty APSC sensor? And who needs these film simulations? Just shoot raw and apply the filter in Lightroom.

I'm no expert no but I'm not naive enough to think that Pana will make entry level social media content creators replace their phones with a camera like the S9 (nor any similar camera).

There's no easier workflow than having everything on one device that you have with you at all times. Another device introduces complexity which hinders the aforementioned people from churning out crap content daily for views.

This seems so obvious to me. It is like people think the S9 has a connection to the internet and apps installed. The S9 doesn't do enough to overcome this. Look at the g100 for an example of what Lumix thinks is a creator camera.
